Young, a dean at the University of California, Davis, Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing and a faculty member of the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society Health Initiative. There are literally thousands of apps available that may be suitable for engaging people with dementia, but how do you know where to begin? Let us help. These apps for dementia are our favorites. We have tested hundreds of apps and these are the ones that we always come back to. Most are available only for the iPad, although a few may be available for other devices. Most are free of charge while some cost a small amount. We have included a brief description of each and a link to the app on Apple iTunes. Give them a try!
It’s an easy and quick way to access advice about memory support. The app is integrated with the Alzheimer’s Association hotline for free, live help round the clock. Available on the App Store an; Caregiving dementia apps are a great tool for any caregiver, in addition to having hands-on support.
Pictello
This is one of my favorites and I tell everyone about it. Pictello lets you easily create 'stories' with pictures and captions. You can create stories of significant periods of the person's life, stories about family or friends. The applications are endless.
It is the primary tool that I use to create Memory Books for patients with dementia as part of my Life History Book Volunteer Project at a local facility. We gather images from family members, narrow down the inevitably huge number provided to about 40 that illustrate the significant events and people in the person's life. We bring them into Pictello (a simple process) and add captions to complete the project. Once done, the memory book can be viewed on the iPad (along with a voice readout of the captions if desired), or a PDF file of the book can be created.
Overheating cooler app mac. The downside is that the app is one of the more expensive at $25.99 (as of January 2020), but it really is worth it.
Let’s Create: Pottery
Have you always wanted to turn pottery on a wheel? Want to give it a try? Let's Create: Pottery lets you do it with no muss or fuss, but the results are amazing. This is a highly realistic app where you use your fingers to shape the pottery on the wheel. When you’re happy with what you see, press the “Fire” button and your piece is fired in the kiln. The result really does look like handmade pottery.
Flow Free
Flow Free is a simple yet addictive puzzle game. The idea is to connect the matching colored circles to each other with a “pipe” by tracing a path from one to the other, but watch out, pipes will break if they cross or overlap! It’s a fun, colorful game that offers challenge but can be done successfully.
Musical Paint
Music is very therapeutic for people with dementia and this app lets them 'paint' musical tones by moving their finger around the screen. Musical Paint lets you create your own musical compositions and paintings by swiping your finger across the screen. Each color provides a different range of notes – you make the design. A fun app with lots of sensory stimulation. This is one case where we do not recommend the free version because it is designed for children and does not offer the same features as the paid app. The cost in the iTunes store is $2.99.
Dominoes
Play a game of dominoes against the computer. You move your domino onto the playing surface and the computer makes its move automatically. It even has sound effects like the real thing. We like this app for dementia for a number of reasons:
![]()
It’s fun and challenging, but not frustrating. Works great with our Match the Dots domino activity.
SET Game
Similar to our TRIO Game, Set uses 'cards' with different shapes, colors and number of shapes on each card to offer a cognitive challenge. The free version offers a daily puzzle while the full version offers more variety.
Lively Silver
This app offers a variety of games designed to help people with early stage dementia. The games address attention, short term and procedural memory and visual and verbal processing speed. The app was developed by and for people in Singapore so there are some cultural differences.
Sentence Maker
In its simplest form, Sentence Maker displays a picture and shows a sentence at the bottom of the screen relating to the picture. The words that make up the sentence are shown in random order around the screen. The app reads the sentence aloud (if desired) and the person uses their finger to move the words into position overtop of the sentence. The full version allows a great deal more including moving individual letters, using your own pictures and sentences and more.
Spaced Retrieval TherApy
Spaced-retrieval training (SRT) is a technique to help people recall personally relevant information that has been previously presented to them. It uses an interval between recall attempts that increases with correct responses and decreases with incorrect ones. This method of recalling targets over increasingly long periods of time has been proven to result in learning in people with mild to moderate dementia, aphasia and other brain injuries. The cost in the iTunes store is $6.99 (as of January 2020.
